In 2005 I opened a traditional delicatessen and catering service in Hammersmith. I sold items like: Parma Ham, Mortadella, Pecorino Cheese, Pancetta, Lombo, Speck and Finocchiona Salami. Within my first month in business, I was asked to cater an event and that is when I started cooking professionally. It was hectic 5 years but I learned a lot and the business thrived. I decided though that it would be more rewarding (and the end product even better) if people came to my dining room rather than me going to theirs. So I decided to sell the business and try to find a restaurant space. I was lucky and within 6 months I had sold one business and opened another – Sanzio. That was 2010.
Why I called it Sanzio? Well I like the works of Raffaello Sanzio (Italian painter and architect, 1483-1520) and I love his painting entitled, La Fornarina, which we have in the background of our menu:
La Fornarina was painted by Sanzio of his mistress Luti. La Fornarina was Sanzio’s term of endearment for Luti as she was the local baker’s daughter. Legend has it that Sanzio met with his premature death after a night of excessive passion with Luti.
The majority of our customers are local residents who visit us regularly. They all understand that we are a family owned restaurant whose moto is to have happy customers!
4 ½ years on, we built an extension in our garden with big French doors (I know it’s a shame I could not get Venetian!). This area is manly for our customers who are always looking to have a small Aperitif dish with a glass of Prosecco or Aperol Spritzer. And so the Aperitif menu was born (Bruschetta, Calamari, Baked Pepperoni in Chianti, Garlic bread, Polenta Chips, King Prawns, Foccacina Bread with cheese) and cocktails are served!
